[edit] Biography
Zasalamel is one of the three starting new characters included in the fourth installment of the saga of video games, Soulcalibur III, alongside Tira and Setsuka. He first appeared on the first promotional trailers of the game as a darkened silhouette, under the titles of both The Enigma and The Mastermind before his real name was revealed. In the game itself, his fighting style and weaponry repertoire is available, in the Character Creation Mode, to characters created under the Saint class.
As stated in his profile, he hails from an ancient tribe that was tasked with the protection of Soul Calibur, many years before the game's set timeframe. Zasalamel was angered by the sect's edicts that forbade the use of the sword; which didn't allow the tribe to use the weapon if a crisis were to occur. When trying to take Soul Calibur in his hands, he was discovered and shunned from the tribe. Zasalamel spent his time later in pursuit of ancient and forbidden knowledge thought lost, until he attained the art of reincarnation. (as he is able to cast spells as he sees them.)
However, he reincarnated repeatedly over many generations, and gradually lost the joy of living as his existence waned and the pain of death increased. In an attempt to end what he considered a "curse", Zasalamel set his eyes on the Soul Edge. He would use his soul devouring properties to commit a form of suicide and release himself from the circle of eternal reincarnations. However, even a death by the sword was not enough, so Zasalamel turned his hopes to Soul Calibur, but when he reached the place where his tribe existed, he found no traces of him or the holy sword.
Tracking Soul Edge once again, he decided to confront Soul Calibur as well. He hoped that he may be able to obtain both of them at once; but he discovered that Soul Edge had lost half of his body and become sealed, and that Soul Calibur had been infected by evil, gradually losing her strength. In order to restore both blades to their power, he revived the will of the sword in the form of Nightmare. In order to aid the sword in his restoration, he needed to create conflict within the mind of Siegfried, the bearer of both blades, by leading survivors of Nightmare's past massacres towards him. If Soul Edge regained his strength, so would Soul Calibur in order to confront him.
Zasalamel then takes a role as lead antagonist in most of the game's characters story modes, attempting to eliminate them as he sees them as potential obstacles. Zasalamel has an event of his own in the game's story mode, Tales of Souls, in which he lures the characters into his stage, the Clock Tower, where he then attacks the character first with a falling gear. The player can avoid the gear with a quick input and avoid starting the match with slightly less health. Zasalamel then appears during the last events of the mode, to either confront the player as a sort of "sub-boss" battle or to take the power of both swords to turn into the game's final boss, Abyss.
In Soulcalibur IV, Zasalamel begins the game with the intention of using the combined powers of the swords Soul Calibur and Soul Edge to destroy his immortality and end his life. With no more joy in living and believing his immortality to be a curse, Zasalamel's objective was to break his endless cycle of reincarnation and sustain a peaceful death.
He has since had a change of heart with the discovery of the giant tower. His new goal is to command that tower and be worshipped as a god. This goal cannot be achieved as long as the hero king Algol lives.
He is now shown in a vision how great mankind would become, so he aspired to protect the swords and see this future realized.
[edit] Endings
[edit] Soulcalibur III
In the spiritual realm, Zasalamel is circled by the two floating swords. Zasalamel absorbs the power of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur into his scythe and a bright white light appears.
- Input Ending: Zasalamel's thoughts are heard as he chronicles the end of his curse in a study filled with books. Now that the curse has ended, Zasalamel has decided to write down all that he experienced during his many lives. All he has to do is wait until his time comes.
- No Input Ending: Nothing seems to happen, however. He is still the same, immortal and cursed after the light fades and his scythe is gone. Zasalamel sinks to his knees with misery and questions why he can't die. He hits the ground with his fists and laughs insanely. He states how everything is over, then says how he has no choice but to continue "this meaningless existence".
[edit] Soulcalibur IV
Zasalamel defeats Algol and creates a green orb that absorbs both the powers of Soul Calibur and Soul Edge. 400 years later Zasalamel is a successful billionaire in New York City in the United States in 21st Century (can be Tekken era). He looks on the horizon and says that as time goes on, he will continue guiding humanity onto the right path. He then leaves with his assistant in a helicopter for a business trip.
A text-epilogue then appears, stating that he will live on forever as a guide for mankind encouraging progress.
[edit] Weapons
[edit] Kafziel
Zasalamel's standard white and gold scythe. It comes from the name Cassiel, an Angel of Death of Jewish lore appointed to take the lives of kings[source?].
[edit] Irkalla
Abyss' standard, and only, weapon. Irkalla is in fact Zasalamel's Kafziel being corrupted by the same energies that mutated Zasalamel himself. His Irkalla has special effects Abyss' Irkalla doesn't have. In both Soulcalibur III and Soulcalibur IV, Irkalla is Zasalamel's ultimate weapon.

[edit] Stages
[edit] Clock Tower
Zasalamel's stage. It is a stone clock tower stated to be located at the corner of a quiet temple outside the edge of an unnamed town. The stage is placed on the top tier, with the glass clock and the inside mechanism serving as background. It is said Zasalamel visits this place ever since it was constructed since it's the only place which reminds him of the passage of time, having lost his sense of time over the course of his countless lives. He also uses the stage in the Tales of Souls mode as setup to trap those searching Soul Edge, attempting to strike them first with a falling gear before deciding to fight the player.
[edit] Lost Cathedral – Ruins
Abyss' stage. It's actually the remains of the Lost Cathedral, the stage of both Siegfried and Nightmare in Soulcalibur III. The stage is created after Abyss releases his energies, which destroy the temple of purity and corrupt it. While actual layout of the stage doesn't change much, if at all, the background is completely different. The visible ground is red and appears to be at-least partially made of lava, the remaining structure are wrecked or burning, and a volcano is visible in the background. In the Arcade Version of the game, the stage is given to one of the sub-bosses, Inferno, while Abyss is given Night Terror's stage.
[edit] Grand Labyrinth - Corridor of Suspended Time (SC4/SCBD)
[edit] Critical Finish
Zasalamel knocks his opponent back and starts drawing a symbol in the air. A void appears behind the opponent and Zasalamel throws them into it, ending his Critical Finish with a, "Farewell!"
