So, Project Soul have finally decided to acknowledge that the Soul series is 20 years old!
They have made a new logo to go along with the 20th anniversary and have offically stated: "To celebrate Soulcalibur 20th Anniversary, we invite you to discover (again) our unique universe! Character focus, trivia, fan arts, quiz and so many surprises. Be ready, Legends are coming!"
"So many surprises" is anyone else excited? They're finally taking notice of the series again, and I'm eager to know what these surprises are! They're releasing special character pictures that contain information and trivia about that specfic character! We will update the Wiki with what is said on these official pictures! The first character they have released information about is Taki.
Is anyone else excited? We have many surprises to come acording to Project Soul, let's hope one of the surprises is Soulcalibur VI!
The surprises could be anything, a new game, a remaster/remake of an old game, a port maybe? Who knows, but I would take any one of those! I'll keep you all updated with new information as it comes out!
It's probably too early to judge right now seems that only one information/trivia image has been released. However, why do you think they have given Taki's fighting style a different name? Now in my opinion it could mean a few things:
After her journey looking for Toki she learnt a new style or learnt an altered version of her original, hinting towards Soulcalibur VI
Project Soul are planning on rebooting the series or retconning the story (kind of like Mortal Kombat 2011) and that will be the name of Taki's style
It's simply a new name for her style in the next game (similar situation to point 1)
It doesn't mean anything at all, they just felt like changing it
Obviously, like I said it's too early to judge as we haven't seen any other information/trivia picture but when more are released, if the fighting styles have been re-named then I'm guessing it's something to do with what they are planning for the next installment. Let me know what you think!
Well her regular fighting style is called Musō-Battō-ryū while the one in that photo is Seong Musoh-Battoh-Ryu so it's a difference in spelling and obviously the Seong part. So that further hints towards her learning an altered version of her own style, maybe she comes across someone who relates to the Seong family and learns some stuff from them? I guess we will find out in the next installment.
I could just be reading into this too much though, maybe it's a mistranslation but I'm sure the Facebook is ran by Hoshino so he would have been the one to post the picture, so unless it's stated to be different in the next installment we'll just keep it.
It's Siegfried vs. Z.W.E.I, Mitsurugi vs. Raphael, Taki vs. Natsu, Hilde vs. Dampierre. This is quite one-sided apart from the second match (and we still know Mitsu is going to win there). What exactly is the point of this when we already know who the popularity characters are from last years' poll?
I know I saw that they were doing that. It's just to see who the "Ultimate Legend" is! I don't think it actually means anything though, just some fun activites for the 20th Anniversary! You're right though, it is very one-sided. Still, it's just a bit of fun :)
It's good to hear about this series again. All my game series and anime are either ending or over and it'd be nice to see a new game for this series. I've only been playing since 2009, but I love these games and I've played and own all of them including Soul Calibur Legends and Broken Destiny.
Everyone, don't forget tomorrow is Comic Con and there will be discussions going on about the Soul series and the 20th Anniversary! Make sure to keep a look out on the internet for any announcements! A new game could be announced, maybe a remaster of an old game (Soulcalibur III?) Who knows? Just be sure to keep a look out!
Hopefully it would be Soul Calibur 6 and they could add Sakura the daughter of Setsuka, Ai the sister of Natsu, Matsumoto the nephew of Mitsurugi and who knows maybe Siegfried, Nightmare, Cervantes, Raphael and Voldo would surely return!
Not that it means much, but Hoshino started posting tweets again after five months. The long time spent in silence made me wonder what was going on. I'm hoping we get that reveal we've been waiting for since 2013.
What do you guys think the tournament is alluding to? I heard someone suggest that these characters could be in SCVI, and they're doing this as a means to secretly decide which characters are more anticipated. That would unfortunately mean that Natsu is returning, but at least it would also mean that Taki is coming back. I'm not for sure though.
I do find it interesting that all of the characters in the tournament were in SCV, with Taki being the lone exception. That being said, Natsu was the only character on there who was introduced in that game. What do you think the significance of this is? Assuming there is any besides to build hype.
Im not very hopeful. This isnt the first character popularity contest the facebook page has conducted, and my hopes for that one hour supposedly dedicated to Soul Calibur back in Namco's comic con panel on the 22nd were quickly dragged through the mud when it ended up being nothing but Tekken talk.
At this point, with the track record every game after II has had, I'm just wondering if Namco is ashamed of and despises the Souls series.
I really hope they surprise us with Soul Calibur VI at TGS when the NEO is confirmed but I also hope it also releases for both the XBOX One and PC too so that more gamers can enjoy the game as exlcusives only hurt sales such as SF5 is proof of it being hurt not being on the XBOX. I just want to have it on the PC along with all versions of Soul Calibur on Steam or the XBOX Marketplace in Windows 10.... Even a remake of Soul Caliber or II would be epic using modern graphics and throwing in an upated CAS would make those remakes epic as you wouldn't have to mess with anything else from those games. Maybe add more stages and even story segments to redeem the franchise I love so much. Or at least a SCV ultra with all characters old and new and just say a wormhole opened up and it's yada yada yada, just bring back the fighters people actually miss.
SCV was actually really solid in terms of gameplay mechanics and the great CAS mode. Too bad the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami messed up the development and thus was the terrible story mode and lack of many other mods we had with SCV. I would have gladly waited another year for them to have polished it up along with finishing the envisioned story mode. They should have at least released an Ultra version with the complete story they had orginially envisioned with. I also hate the fact that Lost Swords closed down without being able to keep your purchased equipment for offline play/collection purposes or at least made into DLC for SCV since it was using the same egine and would have been 100% capabtale. I also miss updated Seong Mi-Na and Casandra already :( The only way I can even look at the updated Seong Mi-Na and Cassanda was modding both of them into my JTAG rip of my legit collectors edition SCV.
I have to disagree, the fact that PS keep using the Soul characters is actually a good thing in my book. I mean, they're keeping the series alive still, and must have interest in it still. Otherwise, what would be the point in using their characters for different purposes. Maybe they're also doing this to get more fan interest in the series, enough interest would hopefully lead to a new game.
Not to mention, Crash Bandicoot made an appearance in Skylanders then got his own game after 9 years.. So to me, characters appearing in other series' besides their own is an indication that something is going to come about soon!
I wouldn't call the series "alive", but rather in a state between life and death. Project Soul stated that "silence shouldn't happen" then they keep on ignoring people and throwing stuff all around without any answer to anything. It's quite disheartening to see all our beloved characters everywhere but in the universe they should be in, without giving a single hint about a newcoming real game.
Also, remember the "new" Crash game is nothing but a remastered version made by Vicarious Visions (who were in charge of Crash games after Sony bought Naughty Dog in 2001 and of... Skylanders games!), it's unfortunately not a new game... If anything, it just means that Bamco is milking the Soul series to the core. Of course I want to see something new, but seeing how they are trying to get each and every buck we have, it might be disastrous. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I guess I just have a positive outlook on the series, or I'm blinded by hope aha!
Ether way, to me the fact that they are using the characters still is a positive, I'd personally be a lot more worried if the series was completely dead, in a sense that even their characters were not appearing in anything at all!
Also, PS have given a lot of hints towards a future installment. Saying things like (not directly quoted, from mind) "the soul still burns" "exciting news in the future" (or something similar to that, I can't remember) "we can't talk about the future of the series... Yet" and other small little hints. I admit though, those hints were around from Lost Swords release to about last year, I think. Since then, they have fell silent, which is worrying.
Anyway, to me I think the fact that the characters are still living on in other games is an indication that they still have interest in the series, and are most likely just trying to figure out what the best step would be to take the next installment.
Only time will tell, however a lot of people are losing interest now because it's been so long. If they do have something planned, a company can only hold interest for a certain amount of time, and putting your characters into different series to garner interest isn't always the best move, and people will get bored. Guess we just have to wait, although even I am getting annoyed with waiting now. I'd rather know if they are or are not planning something for the future, and definite answer would be better rather than little hints. At least that way, if they say that there won't be no more installments, people can stop waiting and wishing for one.
This is Soul Calibur V's fault; it lacked content and modes, its story was an incomplete mess and the character customization was underused, showing that most of the development when to the online mode that people stopped playing after two months.
The lack of Arcade Mode endings and the pathetic story mode made the game unappealling to casual fans and its gameplay, while decent, was not as engaging as SC2 or even the slightly unbalanced but still good SC3 for fans of those games.
Unfortunately, Tekken 7 has suffered the same thing with the lack of Arcade endings and content but due to brand recognition has managed to sell well.
With games like Injustice and Mortal Kombat (love'em or hate'em) having a lot of content i.e, full story modes, Arcade endings, a comparable skill gap and now character personalization with Injustice 2. PS/Namco has to step up their game if they want to compete.
It's weird how Soulcalibur's Facebook page went completely silent in the middle of their 20th Anniversary celebration. A theory is that they got tired of all the complaining on the comments, but what did they expect? The only reason people went along in the first place was because they thought it was leading up to something. If they have nothing real to show, of course they're going to be mad. Still, I just find it strange that not a thing has been posted at all in six months. Generally, a silence like that could be a build up to something big. Or it could be dead for real.
But as JaseyJasee said, if SC was completely dead, Namco wouldn't be using their characters and the franchise at all. Clearly Namco believes there is still profitability from the franchise, and Project Soul is obviously still around. Also, I remember the composer Junichi Nakatsuru saying to "Please look forward to all the exciting new themes our sound designing team will produce for you." which is as good as an indicator as any that they're planning something.
I want to hold on to at least a shred of hope that SC isn't dead. It was one of my favorite franchises ever and I want to see it again for current gen, with the old characters back. It's just really hard to remain optimistic after all these years of waiting and getting burned from so many events where I was hoping it would be announced but it wasn't. Let's keep our fingers crossed for the future.
JaseyJasee: I totally agree with your opinion even though I lack the optimism you show. I've always been used to thinking the worst to be either pleasantly surprised or not disappointed in the end ^^ As you said, their silence (even if they felt sorry about it) and the full stop of their activities aren't a good omen for the future...
GoodGamer14: Tekken is surfing on the "buy DLC characters who've been ready for months" wave, which is unfortunate, as it's the only reason why I never buy MK or Injustice games until the GotY edition. PS and Bamco should focus on what made their series the best, and not draw from inspiration from where there's only a downgraded version of what they can do.
Ultimate Lazer: that's actually the reason why I'm losing hope. They were on a roll, with tiny hints, active polls and trivia (though most of them were inaccurate ^^), and BAM suddenly, nothing. That is the worst PR I have ever seen in the history of video games. I'm just like you, still hoping without hoping too hard (that last bit of hope is always the hardest to snuff out), the Soul series was my favourite fighting game series, to me it has always bee way better than Tekken...
Let's hope we'll (finally) hear something from PS soon, because we haven't had anything since January...
