Masamune was a famous fourteenth century Japanese sword smith. This sword is said to have been crafted by him, but whether that is true or not is unclear. But it is such an incredibly elegant piece of work that the issue of whether or not it was made by Masamune himself feels trivial.
Masamune is one of Mitsurugi's weapons in Soulcalibur IV. It, along with Shishi-Oh, is available by default. It has Auto Unblockable Attack C equipped by default as a skill, which gives players a slight chance of turning the next high damage attack into an Unblockable Attack.

Edit
- Goro Nyudo Masamune made most of his swords in the late 13th and 14th centuries. His swords were brought to legendary status with the proclaimation of thier superior build quality. There are many legends surrounding his career as a Japanese swordsmith. Masamune is often compared to Muramasa Sengo (and because of this, so are their weapons named after them in media) and one legend states that the two swordsmiths once layed their finest swords in a river, and watched as Muramasa's sword sliced every leaf in two, while Masamune's drove every leaf away. This meant, that while Muramasa's weapon would kill anyone regardless of who they were, Masamune's sword was not bloodthirsty, and would drive away those that it did not need to harm. There are various versions of this legend, ranging from Muramasa and Masamune being friends, enemies, or Muramasa being a subordinate of Masamune, despite the fact that the two actually lived several centuries apart.
- A Masamune-made sword was presented to Harry S. Truman after World War II.
- The Masamune shows up in many video games, due to its namesakes fame and is usually portrayed as a legendary weapon that needs to be located, or as the weapon of choice of a "formidable" character. The Final Fantasy series is well known for using Masamune as a legendary sword, with examples such as it being a high powered weapon in Final Fantasies III, IV, and IX, and also being Sephiroth's sword in Final Fantasy VII, in which, it is seven feet long.
- Standard also uses this weapon as his first and only weapon.
- In Soulcalibur V, one of Mitsurugi's default weapons is called Fake Masamune.
