Biography[]

Soul Edge[]

After the death of the great Eirakutei/Yǒnglèdì (永乐帝), the Ming Dynasty was left open to plundering by pirates from southern Japan. Li Long was hired by the emperor on a private mission to assassinate the leader of the pirates and bring Soul Edge home with him. However, he never really cared about Soul Edge and instead decided to not only assassinate the leader of the pirates, but the daimyo feudal lords as well. This was not part of the mission, but there was no doubt in his mind that he would succeed. However, Long was not as strong as he thought, and an attack on the head of a powerful family in Honshū failed horribly. Left badly injured, he was rescued by a young girl named Chie. Chie was the daughter of the former leader of the Fu-Ma clan, Hachibei, operating as an innkeeper. Chie had been traumatized by the death of her mother as a child and had permanently lost the ability to speak. She devoted herself to Long's care, and they eventually fell in love; and he stayed with Chie long after he was made fit for travel again. One day, while Li Long was out, a fight had broken out at the Inn. Chie was thought to have been killed, and a wounded Hachibei told Long that a wandering swordsman had started the fight and left. Witnesses thought that it may have been Heishiro Mitsurugi, but obviously, Mitsurugi was not the only swordsman wandering the land. In actuality, the swordsman had been a ninja of the Fu-Ma clan, sent by its leader, Toki, to take back the ninjatō, Mekki-Maru, that Hachibei had stolen from them. Long set out for revenge on Chie's behalf, learning along the way that Mitsurugi was looking for Soul Edge. Li Long decided that if he found the sword first, Mitsurugi would eventually have to come to fight him; and if it turned out that Mitsurugi wasn't responsible for Chie's death, he would seek out every last swordsman until he got his revenge.

In his journey, he came to Valencia, Spain, where he found the dread pirate, Cervantes de Leon, keeper of the watchers—one of which Long had killed previously—and possessor of the Soul Edge. He tried to steal the evil blade from him, and ended up in a fierce battle with the pirate; but he was quickly defeated by the sword's overwhelming power and fell to the ground, drenched in blood, calling out Chie's name. At that exact moment, Chie awoke in a monastery in Honshū. She may have been severely scarred on her back, but she was alive, and eventually learned of Long's misguided quest for revenge on her behalf. She waited for him for a month, when she discovered that she was pregnant with his child.

Soulcalibur III[]

After his complete defeat at the pirate's hand, Li Long tried to escape. Cervantes chased him, but for some odd reason he gave up pursuit (probably due to the presence of Sophitia Alexandra). Before fainting, Li Long took a look back and witnessed a bright column of light coming from the port - the Evil Seed. When he woke up, he found he not only suffered physically, but mentally as well. He questioned himself if his acts were righteous and not atrocities, and his confidence shattered while his inner self was consumed. Unable to fend off the assassins hunting him anymore, he fled during the nights, disguised and under a false name.

Three years later, when Xianghua, a member of the Ming Dynasty Imperial Guard, was preparing to leave on a similar mission on the emperor's behalf, she was asked by Meimei to check on her brother, Long, and see if he was alive. Xianghua did eventually learn that Li Long had not died, finding him just after having won a battle, but he told her that he would never return to Ming Dynasty China again. Eventually he stumbled upon a town, and hoped to get lost among its population. But even there his pursuers were approaching him. About to lose hope, he was saved by a girl. He tried to leave, but at last he accepted her offer and stayed with her, knowing it wasn't meant to last. His pursuers were still on the hunt, and she reminded him of Chie, stirring his guilty conscience. She took care of him, because she felt he has lost everything.

Then one day the assassins found him. The girl tried to tell him to leave, but Li Long ignored her and stood with his weapon in hand, trembling. In the past, it was hard to believe he'd been defeated, but now he barely defeated his foes. In that moment something returned to him: how to fight for something. He decided to leave after that. As he was leaving, the girl ran to him and gently touched his back, communicating her feelings more clearly than ever. But still he left the town that day, now knowing what to do, for the ones who urge him to live.

Half of himself was left with that dreaded blade. Now it's time to regain it, but still he doesn't know that his lover is searching for him, and that the proof of their love is now breathing.

Soulcalibur V[]

Li Long eventually crossed paths with Taki, from whom he learned about Chie's survival. He now lives with the Fu-ma clan, which is under Chie's leadership, with her and their son.

Profile[]

Soulcalibur III[]

It was supposed to be just another ordinary day of "warrior hunting" for Li Long. But the fate that awaited him in the devastated Spanish harbor was one of despair. After disposing the jet black hawk that suddenly attacked, a man who appeared to be a pirate captain stood before him with a sword in each hand, radiating a cursed aura. Li Long fought with all his might and power...and lost.
Li Long desperately ran, barely clinging to his life. He thought the man would hunt him down for the finishing blow, but for whatever reason the man left him alone and wandered off. On the verge of losing consciousness, he looked back and witnessed, with his one remaining eye, the single column of light soar high into the heavens...
As Li Long gradually regained consciousness, he realized his body was devastated. His wounds were deep and it would take time to heal. But the psychological damage was far greater than the physical. A sense of worthlessness overwhelmed him. His hands trembled from an unknown fear. His unflappable confidence was suddenly shaken.
Were his past deeds really righteous? Did he, unknowingly, repeat terrible atrocities against those warriors that he "hunted?" And maybe even towards Chie?
As a piece of his confidence fell, the rest crumbled with it. All in this world seemed to condemn him and drag him to the depths of hell. Guilt, real or imagined, haunted his mind. In time he came to the point where he could not even hold his weapon straight. Something essential within his being had been "consumed."
His life was changed completely. Until now, he could effortlessly thwart any danger that came his way.... The so-called "shinobi" from Japan, the hunters from his motherland sent to assassinate him. Then suddenly, all that seemed an insurmountable threat, haunting him like a shadow. Li Long eventually felt more and more cornered, fleeing like a fallen warrior. He now traveled under an alias, constantly changing his guise and never walking in daylight. He was supposed to be avenging Chie, but the predator had suddenly become the prey.
For how long he continued like this, he was not sure. He had lost his sense of time. He came upon a town by the straits, hoping to seek anonymity within its vibrant population. But his pursuers would not relent and their powers eventually reached that town. Just as he was resigned to death, he was unexpectedly saved by a girl. He would normally walk away without a thought. But something stopped him, and it was not the girl's kindness--it was the faint gestures that hinted she too had lost something. Normally, he wouldn't think twice about using a false name. For some reason though, he gave her his real name, something he had not done in a while.
He accepted her offer and stayed, knowing peace would only last so long. His pursuers were ruthless and relentless. Furthermore, looking upon the girl would often remind him of Chie, stirring his guilty conscience.
But why was he finding it so hard to leave?
The girl faithfully took care of this foreigner, who would sometimes stare at her with deeply sad eyes. It may have been that this girl, who had lived all her life weak and powerless, simply could not turn her back on Li Long, who looked like he had lost everything.
One day, when the heavens were covered by grey clouds, they finally appeared. The men said something to the girl in the entrance. The girl was trying to tell him something with her gaze, but he intentionally ignored it and stood in front of his pursuers with his weapon in hand. He fought while trying to control his trembling hands. In the past, it was unheard of for Li Long to be slow to react, even if it was of the slightest margin.
He barely defeated his foes. But the experience registered something inside him--he remembered what it was like to fight for something. As the commotion subsided, the girl stood frozen in silence, staring at the scene. No matter. He was planning to leave anyway. He had nothing more to say to her. But she quietly hurried to his side, and gently touched his back, communicating her feelings more clearly than words could possibly express.
Li Long left town that day. Now he knew. Having his revenge would not save him. There was something he had to do, for those that urged him to live...It was still there. He had left half of himself with that dreaded blade. Now was the time to regain it. But he did not yet know. The woman he loved was searching after him, and the proof of their love was taking breath inside her. Will the day ever come, when he will discover the truth? Will he ever regain what was lost, and finally find the peace that he yearned for?[1]

Soulcalibur VI[]

A proficient nunchaku wielder, Li Long is the brother of Xianghua's dear friend Meimei. Despite his young age, he joined the emperor's personal guard, carrying out missions with an iron will and steady hand. Li Long and Zhang Wu, a fellow nunchaku wielder, were known as the "Twin Bulwarks" of the emperor's guard for their great skill and renown.
Li Long was sent by the emperor to search for Soul Edge and deal with the problem of Japanese pirates, but he went missing after he left the country. Some say he abandoned his mission and ran away with a Japanese woman. Others say he died in battle attempting to retrieve the Hero's Sword. However, no one knows for sure. His mission to retrieve Soul Edge was passed on to his comrade and rival, Zhang Wu, whose real mission is rumored to have been to find and assassinate the missing warrior. Whatever the case, Zhang Wu's search also proved fruitless. The emperor, enraged by failure after failure, sent a third party in search of the cursed sword—this time composed of the most elite of his personal guard.

Soul Edge Ending[]

Li Long is defeated by Cervantes and is laying on the ground, badly beaten...

Bad Ending: Li Long dies, and the scene changes to Chie standing in a field holding a comb. She starts to cry, wondering where Li Long is. She then realizes that she may never see him again, and she's carrying his baby.

Good Ending: Li Long stands up. An illusion of Chie appears, and he goes over to hug her. He then realizes that he is hugging the larger blade of Soul Edge. The smaller blade floats up into the air and speaks to him in Chie's voice, asking him to return to her. Li Long grabs Soul Edge and returns.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • His name resembles Bruce Lee's Mandarin name, Li Xiao Long, which means "Little Dragon".
  • Li Long's reasons for believing that Chie is dead can be potentially be explained in Taki's bio; what probably happened is that Toki sent someone to find and possibly kill Hachibei - this would be the unidentified swordsman who was seen during the fight (it wasn't Mitsurugi). Furthermore, Taki's lie that Hachibei and Chie had died may have also caused confusion. This isn't officially stated, but it makes some level of sense.
  • In Soul Edge's Edge Master Mode, it is implied that Cervantes was the one who killed Chie, this however is obviously a translation error. Not only was Chie not killed, but it makes no sense that Cervantes would go all the way to China, kill one person, and go all the way back to Spain again.
  • Even though he isn't a playable character in Soulcalibur, Li Long still makes a cameo appearance in "The Tale Begins: Prologue" Art Gallery, showing his canonical defeat at the hands of Cervantes.
  • Maxi can use Falcon in Soulcalibur II, Li Long's nunchaku, and in the weapon gallery, it mentions that Li Long once used it.
  • Along with Hwang, Li Long can also be seen in Soulcalibur II's Weapon Master mode opening intro.
  • Li Long trained Maxi under the alias of "Zhang Wu". Zhang Wu is the same name of a comrade of his back when he still worked for the emperor.

Soulcalibur III[]

  • In "Quick Play" mode, Li Long's Destined Battle is against Taki.
  • In his 2P outfit, he has a scar on his forehead. He probably got it during his battle with Cervantes.
  • Li Long does not have a stage on his own, though he can be found on Tales of Souls in the only following stage as a "Prepare to Defend Yourself" challenge: Ostrheinsburg Castle - Battlement.
  • Some of his parts are from character creation. The only parts that are unique are his snake belt, the textures of his shirt, along with most of his quotes.
  • His facial model resembles that of Ganryu from the TEKKEN series.
  • Li Long (while choosing only Maxi (after defeating his "Doppelgänger") rarely appears on Indian Port "alongside" Hwang (while choosing only Zasalamel) as an extra stage during "Prepare to Defend Yourself" challenge at certain conditions on Tales of Souls from Soulcalibur III.

Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny[]

  • Li Long appears as a created character in Quick Match using the Maxi's moveset.
  • As revealed on the developer blog, Taki revealed to Li Long that Chie was still alive in Japan.

Soulcalibur V[]

  • Li Long also appears in this game as a created character in Quick Match using the Maxi's moveset. His appearance is different to how he appeared in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, more closely resembling his Soulcalibur III design. He has the title Angry Kickboxer and wield's Maxi's version of The Master.
