"You are strong. One day, you will succeed in life."
— Girardot

Girardot Argezas (ジラルド・アルゼザス Jirarudo Aruzezasu?) is a fictional character in Namco's Soul series of fighting games. He appears in Soulcalibur III side-quest mode Chronicles of the Sword as the player's mentor and ally at first, then as a rebel enemy. He's also an unlockable Bonus Character in the main game. He represents the "Lance" Create-a-Fighter discipline.

Biography[]

Since Girardot comes from the Chronicles of the Sword mode, his canonicity is disputed.

Girardot was one of the best tacticians and soldiers in the Grandall Empire. He was mostly known for his cold-minded and dirty tactics. To Girardot, victory was the only justice, and he was not hesitant on using low tactics to achieve it. He also thought it honored those fallen in battle.

Even when he was accused of selling his soul, he stood firm with his will strong enough to overcome his fate. But when he became the instructor of the Parousia Academy, self-doubt started to develop in him. One by one his pupils marched to war, and not a single one returned alive. When the young girl he considered a daughter died as well, he recognized the crime he committed.

He instructed them how to die, and he was fostering death. Still, he faced reality and stood firm. He vowed to protect the land and its people with his very soul until the end.

In a short time he joined with two of his former students, Abelia and a young talented cadet, which is the player. He acted as a guide and followed his student's decisions, amazed by his/her personality and actions. At the same time, he entered in various discussions with Emperor Strife due to his strange and almost suicidal orders and his hesitance to send back-up units.

A year after Dalkia's fall, Girardot recognized the emperor's dictatorship and the oppression of the empire, and rebelled against him and founded a rebel army of rebelled knights and peasants. But Strife sent his own student against him.

After two victories, the Cadet faces Girardot in Chronicle 15 in his stronghold, and after his defeat, Girardot tries to make the player understand what he's/she's falsely fighting for, and what he/she should truly fight for: the people. But before he can end his speech, Strife suddenly appears and stabs him with Soul Edge, killing him instantly.

Battle Strategy[]

Girardot is thought as the final adversary in Chronicle of The Sword Chapter 15. Besides being higher leveled compared to the normal enemy units, his fortress gives him immunity to flinching to your attacks, which means that he will not suffer any stuns from any moves, and he will also be immune to throws. This makes battling him similar to other previous units like Aege who also have this battle element, where the player must cautiously attack and evade their attacks to cause damage while also being wary of ring outs and damage since the player is still vulnerable to attacks and throws.

Girardot uses the Sacrifice weapon that has increased reach, and is also able to penetrate your guard and cause chip damage from blocking his attack. He however will lose health in turn when guarding your attacks, but this isn't much of a drawback since Girardot will have very little reason to block since he's immune to flinching, and he will often just outright attack and counter the player when they try attack him. It's recommended to use a bob and weave tactic to fight him by waiting for him to miss or whiff attacks and attacking him during his recovery, and carefully sidestepping him and running into attack him while he's open to attacks. You can also guard impact his attacks and attack him during his vulnerable state although you must be wary of him guard impacting you in turn.

Another easy way to beat him is with the Sickle discipline, as the A+B attack will be able to bypass the flinching immunity since at long range, the attack will become a throw attack sequence that will be able to damage him and knock him down, and the attack can then be repeated again during his attempts to attack again. This method may however be difficult to even use on first playthroughs of the mode unless the player's main character unit is a ninja who is at level 20 which will allow access to the sickle weapon style.

Gameplay[]

Girardot uses the Lance discipline, giving him access to a long ranged Lance in battle. His style is notable for it's long reach that rivals characters like Kilik and Seong Mi-na, with him having numerous long ranged attacks he can use when not directly facing his opponent, making approaching him very risky. He's also able to easily close the gap and attack nearly full screen with his attacks that involve him jumping in, doing a full thrust with the Lance's full length, or even running in, being able to easily floor opponents not carefully defending. This makes getting a ring out with him quite simple.

His damage output is also quite good, and he's also able to stop a few attacks by canceling the full animation. While overall very intimidating, his style is somewhat telegraphed as his speed isn't the best, and his start up on specific attacks can be easy to see and feasibly evade which can put him in helpless situations where an opponent can simply ring him out when left facing away near the ledge that he often will be left near if an attack misses. His moves that are able to catch opponents who frequently step to the left or right are also good in range, but are also simple to duck due to them being highs, making these risky against characters who have ways to move under them. Close range is also not his forte, as he lacks quick attacks up close and can be overwhelmed by faster styles unless he is able to successfully defend them to reset the distance.

Overall, he's an easy to utilize character and discipline who is very straightforward although careful use is recommended to avoid punishment or being dominated up close.

Trivia[]

  • Girardot's entire costume is made from Create-a-Fighter parts. He has no original parts or features.
  • In Chronicles of the Sword, Girardot is the boss in Chronicles 2 and 15. In Chronicles 7 through 12 he is part of the player's list of pre-made Custom Characters.
  • In Namco's Soularchive site[1] Girardot's son name is incorrectly written as Ryutigar, when his name in the game is Rudiger.
  • Girardot's style is the same as Johan Dürer's but using a lance instead of an iron sword. A more accurate translation of it is Riese Apostel, which means "Giant Apostle" in German.
  • Girardot's Destined Battle during Quick Play is Rock.
  • Girardot appears in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny as a custom character in Quick Match using Hilde's moveset. However, he uses the old man voice instead of the man voice. He appears under the player name, "N!TRO", and has the 181st title, "Impatient".
  • Girardot's given name was originally going to be Gerald, but was changed as to make it sound less common.[source?]
