Unknown Soul is a foe that can be fought in the arcade version of Soulcalibur and the Playstation 2 version of Soulcalibur III, although the details differ between the two games. In the former, Unknown Soul is simply a member of the playable roster with a translucent appearance, whereas the latter has three different NPCs that goes by the name of "Unknown Soul".

Soulcalibur[]

Unknown Soul appears in the Arcade version of Soulcalibur, of which they are a member of the playable roster but with a slightly-distorted, translucent appearance. However, Unknown Souls can only be fought against if the CPU is playing a character that hasn't been unlocked yet. Normally, the CPU never plays as a character that is not unlocked. However, there is one exception: for every character, the penultimate fight before Inferno is a Destined Battle—or a battle with a pre-determined opponent. However, if you were to play as a character whose opponent hasn't been unlocked yet, the opponent's name will be replaced with "UNKNOWN SOUL" and they will have a slightly-distorted, translucent appearance. The only exception to this is Hwang, as his destined battle is with Maxi if Seong Mi-na isn't unlocked yet, and Hwang is always unlocked before her.

This Unknown Soul appearance is also an unlockable outfit for every character in the Arcade version of the game, available once Edge Master is unlocked.

Soulcalibur III[]

Unknown Soul are foes that can be fought in the Tales of Souls mode in Soulcalibur III. They can be fought in the Grand Labyrinth (Darkness), in which Olcadan resides. There are three different Unknown Souls: one that resembles Li Long, one that resembles Hwang and one that resembles Arthur. The only difference that the Unknown Souls have with the actual Li Long, Hwang and Arthur is that each of the three only have one outfit—the 1P outfit of each of their respective character except completely silhouetted.

The form that Unknown Soul takes relates to the chosen character. For example, Seong Mi-na fights Hwang's soul, and Cervantes fights Li Long's soul.

It is likely that Unknown Soul is merely the character being represented, but shrouded, rather than a separate character. The fact that the stage is darkened supports this, giving the impression that it is simply supposed to be too dark to see the character clearly.
