A Destined Battle is the player's fight with the character who is his rival or sworn enemy. They always occur near or just before the final battle of a character's story. Destined Battle opponents are specific to each character, and usually resolve a part of the character's plot conflict. For example, in Soulcalibur III, Cervantes fights Taki as his Destined Battle, who was the one that defeated him during the events of Soul Edge. On some occasions, the Destined Battle is actually against a friend/ally of the characters, such as Kilik's Destined Battle in Soulcalibur II with Xianghua. In some cases, Destined Battles can even happen between a set of characters who have never met before. An example of this is most bonus characters (excluding Ashlotte and returning members of the main cast) and guest characters since they have no canon relationships. Officially, Destined Battles were discontinued in Soulcalibur IV, however the concept of fighting against a specific opponent still existed in the game's Arcade Mode. However, there are no special quotes/cutscenes and it takes place in Stage 4 as opposed to taking place near the final stage. Soulcalibur V continued a similar approach, although bringing back special quotes for the match up.

In Soulcalibur through Soulcalibur III, the player fought his/her "destined opponent" just before he/she fought the final battle (Zasalamel, Siegfried, Nightmare, Inferno, etc.). In Soulcalibur, Destined Battles take place in either the stage of the chosen character, or his/her opponent's stage. In Soulcalibur II, all Destined Battles are fought within Ostrheinsburg Chapel. In Soulcalibur III, all Destined Battles are fought at the Lost Cathedral, complete with special music (which actually debuted in Soulcalibur II, but only for a few battles). In Soulcalibur IV, the character specific battles for Arcade mode are found in Stage 4, taking place in the Egyptian Temple - Sacred Flame stage. In Soulcalibur V, character specific battles occur on Stage 5 of the Standard Arcade route, taking place in the opponent's stage.

In Soulcalibur, some Destined Battles actually changed, depending on which characters had been obtained by the player. In Soulcalibur IV, a similar system was used for the characters which needed to be bought online.

In Soulcalibur III, there were a few variations of Destined Battles in the game's Tales of Souls mode. There are two ways the player can diverge off the default battle, either by being defeated by Zasalamel, or by not being defeated once (excluding "Prepare to Defend Yourself" battles). If the former happens, the game would state that the player has become "cursed" and his or her path would eventually lead to his/her character's Destined Battle Character's stage, the battle will not have a scene at the start, but will use the Destined Battle music. If the later takes place, the player will be informed that someone has boasted about destroying Soul Edge, and he can be found at the Grand Labyrinth. If the player chooses to enter, the Destined Battle is fought within it, once again with the special Destined Battle music instead of the normal Labyrinth tune.

Soulcalibur V also has character specific match ups, special quotes for the pre-battle introduction and/or victory said during specific match ups in any game mode. The special quotes from the Destined Battles can also be seen in any game mode in the same way, not just Arcade.

Trivia[]

  • In the Arcade version of Soulcalibur, if a player chooses a character whose opponent hasn't been unlocked yet, then their name will be replaced with "Unknown Soul" and they'll have a translucent appearance. However, this will never normally happen due to the unlock order preventing this from happening. Hwang is the sole exception; if he is played before Seong Mi-na is unlocked, then he'll face Maxi instead.
