"Hope only brings disappointment."
— Amy

Amy Sorel (エイミ・ソレル, Eimi Soreru) is a character in the Soul series of fighting games. She made her first appearance in Soulcalibur II in the opening video sequence, lying to some soldiers about the location of Raphael, who is hiding. She then appeared as a playable bonus character for Soulcalibur III with a moveset identical to the rapier discipline used by custom characters. In Soulcalibur III: Arcade Edition, she is included as one of the main characters.

Later in Soulcalibur IV, Amy became a main unlockable character, using a mixture of the rapier discipline from Soulcalibur III along with some moves borrowed from her foster father, Raphael. She also shares her movelist with Scheherazade, one of the bonus characters. She has also appeared in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny and Soulcalibur: Lost Swords.

Her character is in contrast to Talim, as they are both young and pretty females. Even though she has an innocent appearance, Amy behaves much more ruthlessly probably due to the combination of the tragic loss of her parents, harsh childhood in poverty and the influence of Raphael. She does not show remorse in her quick and deep slashes nor holds back her disdain toward her opponent. Her trademark Gothic Lolita inspired outfit matches her cold demeanor and pessimism. Raphael appears to be the only one that she cares about in the world.

As gratitude for saving his life, he trained her to be a formidable wielder of the rapier. The two only have each other to trust in this world and they deeply love each other as father and daughter.

What lies in her soul is Loyalty.

In Soulcalibur: Lost Swords, she is referred to as A Young Woman Bound By Silence.

Biography[]

Soulcalibur II[]

In Soulcalibur II, Amy was a poor orphan who lived on the streets of Rouen. Her parents died of a plague (Black Death) that had spread across all of Europe during this time period. She had no other family to go to after the loss of her parents. One day, she came across a man named Raphael Sorel, who was being chased by the local authorities. She hid Raphael from the soldiers who were pursuing him; though only in spite of the soldiers, who ran her poverty-stricken town. As Raphael had never owed his life to anyone before, he felt he must protect and repay her. He felt something he never had before for Amy, so he took her into his home and looked after her as his own daughter, to repay her for the kindness she had shown to him.

Soulcalibur III & IV[]

Raphael had left her, left this castle home behind. She knew he had done it for her sake, because he wanted her to be happy more than anything else in the world. She understood, nevertheless she was restless without him.

Amy recalled the days before they arrived in these lands, when they had lived in the west. And she remembered the day he had returned from a long journey. He had collapsed on the floor at once, having incurred deep wounds. Far from ordinary wounds, these were infected and gave off a strange stench. After several days they showed no signs of healing. When she tried to clean the wounds, the viscous fluid that stuck to her skin was the wrong color: a baleful shade close to black.

By the time he began to recover, the aberrations had spread over his whole body, as well as to the girl who had nursed him. The shadows that had seeped out of the darkness had stained them the same color. This was the power of Soul Edge, a phenomenon called "malfestation". Amy understood that the two of them had stepped beyond the boundaries of humanity.

"Be a good girl. I'll be back in a while."

Those were the last words to her, but Amy had to ponder them for a moment. Even the most dutiful fledgling takes flight when the longing for its parents grows too strong.

(The cursed sword, Soul Edge. Did he leave in order to find it again?)

A single butterfly was being tossed about on the cold night winds like a lonely star drifting far from heaven; like a soul freed from all its burdens. Silently, with all her feelings tucked away where none could read them, Amy pushed open the door.

Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny[]

(Non-Canon)

In the Gauntlet mode, she first appears on Chapter 9-1, where she sends out her identical dolls to attack the player and company while they try to find her. She appears as herself on Chapter 9-3, where she fights the player herself.

In Other Characters' Storylines[]

Although Amy does not appear in Soulcalibur V, it is stated in Raphael's profile that she has been separated from him, and that he is searching for her.

Soulcalibur IV Ending[]

Soul Calibur IV - Amy Ending

With Soul Calibur in his power, Raphael attempts to use the sword to create a new world for Amy and himself. When the sword didn't react to his request, Raphael slaughtered his two personal servants, claiming that this world now truly belongs to only himself and Amy,

judging that his maidens should never have been here. As he cackles maniacally, Amy sneaks up from behind the megalomaniac and pushes him into the edge before him, though this certainly does no lasting harm to Raphael. She smiles mischievously when the words "RING OUT!" humorously featured alongside the announcer's voiceover. The text-only epilogue then says, thus, confirming that Amy would never truly hurt her father:

"And then, Amy and Raphael created their own new world..."

Physical Appearance[]

In her debut appearence, Amy is the smallest character and noticably young, she had green eyes and vermillion hair tied into elaborately curled pigtails. In Soulcalibur IV, her eyes changed colour to red. She is the only character to dress in a Gothic Lolita theme.

Profile[]

Soulcalibur III[]

The nights were cold and serene. The moonlight was so strong it seared and appeared to give power to the darkness.
Tonight, as always, she was to be enshrouded in this darkness. In the dimly lit room, she sat like a doll, motionless on the chair and staring out into the dark night. Far below, torches blazed amidst the acrimonious clanging of armor moving about.
This light and sound she had experienced before.
"Be a good girl, I'll be back in a while...."
That is what he said before leaving with his sword. The raucous night then became quiet, but that did not last long.
And now, he was gone. He had left her--for her own sake.
The light and sound will intrude their world any moment now. Violently, without regard, engulfing his world....
She rose from her chair and headed toward the door, stopping at the entrance. She looked back at the grand hall. Her exquisite face clouded over for a second, then she quickly turned and opened the door.
She mused over those words once again. This time, her lips parted slightly into a smile.[1]

Soulcalibur IV[]

Peace had been restored to the night, but still he did not return. He had left her. Left their castle home behind. She knew he had done it for her sake, because he wanted her to be happy more than anything else in this world, but nonetheless she was restless.

"Be a good girl, I'll be back in a while." Those were his last words to her, but Amy had to ponder them for a moment. Even the most dutiful fledgling takes flight when the longing for its parents grows too strong.

(The cursed sword, Soul Edge. Did he leave in order to find it again?)

How many nights must she wander? A single butterfly was being tossed about on the cold night winds, like a lonely star drifting far from heaven; like a soul freed from all its burdens. Silently, with all her feelings neatly locked away where none could see them, Amy pushed open the door.

Peace had been restored to the night. With the besieging army crushed, nothing remained to disturb the silence.

Torch lights, far fewer than before, made their way down through the steep ridges. It had seemed a legion of flames encircled the castle, writhing. And now, one by one, the last of them were swallowed into the darkness. Who knew how many lives were lost on this day?

Countless lives had blinked out, like the faint lights of so many fireflies. But one girl, who was gazing out the window coldly, spared not a moment's thought to lament life's transience. Her eyes darted restlessly across the mantle of darkness, as if searching for something.

(Still, no sign of him.)

He had left her, left this castle home behind. She knew he had done it for her sake, because he wanted her to be happy more than anything else in this world. And so he had to leave her side for a little while, in search of something that would protect the bond they shared. She understood. Nonetheless she was restless. The grandest of furnishings and the most lavish clothes could hardly replace the warmth of his hands.

Amy recalled the days before they arrived in these lands, when they had lived in the west. And she remembered the day he had returned from a long journey. He had collapsed on the floor at once; wherever he had gone, he had incurred deep wounds. A moment's glance had told her they were not ordinary sword wounds. They were infected, and gave off a strange stench. And even after several days they had showed no sign of healing. When she had tried to clean the wounds, the viscous fluid that stuck to her skin was the wrong color: a baleful shade so close to black that it only confirmed her fears.

By the time he had finally taken a turn for the better, the aberrations had spread over his whole body—as well as to the girl who had stayed by his side and nursed him. The shadows that had seeped out of the darkness and immersed them had stained them the same color. That was Soul Edge's power; this phenomenon they called "malfestation." But even without this explanation, Amy already understood that the two of them had stepped beyond the boundaries of humanity.

Remembering the sensation of her own body turning into something foreign from the inside out, Amy gently slumped her shoulders. They may be forced to shun daylight and slake their nightly thirst in secret, but was fine, so long as he was by her side.

"Be a good girl. I'll be back in a while."

Those were his last words to her, but Amy had to ponder them for a moment. Even the most dutiful fledgling takes flight when the longing for its parents grows too strong.

Again, Amy cast her gaze out the window, across a world stained in darkness.

(The evil blade, Soul Edge. Did he leave so he might find it again?)

Amy left the window and slowly, without the faintest hint of noise, cut across the gloom-filled room. Except for a downcast glance, not a single emotion marred her face.

(How many nights must we wander?)

A single butterfly was being tossed about on the cold night winds, like a lonely star drifting far from heaven; like a soul freed from all its burdens.

Silently, with all her feelings locked away where none could read them, Amy pushed open the door.[2]

Personality[]

Amy has a generally calm and collected nature within and out of battle. She usually interacts with a slight sense of arrogance in her attitude towards opponents, often speaking in a nihilistic nature towards her foes. She shows very little emotion when speaking, always coming across as composed and not letting her emotions get the best of her, giving her a rather cold air as well.

Fighting Style[]

Soulcalibur IV[]

Amy possesses a relatively large number of useful options in her repertoire of graceful, ballet-like attacks. She shares many of Raphael's attacks, mainly throws. Amy's individual strikes deal relatively low damage but once she puts her opponent on the ground, she keeps momentum, providing an extremely high cumulative damage output. She's also mostly very safe, fast, and has a very strong reverse mix-up game with evasive moves. She has a decent attack range, since she tends to step forward slightly whilst dealing a blow. Her biggest drawback is that her most damaging attacks tend to be easily side-stepped, leaving her in a helpless and perilous position. This can be overcome by timing variations. Another drawback for Amy, is that in terms of ring out ability, she doesn't have many moves that can knock an opponent out of the ring. However with all things considered, Amy tends to do very well in tournaments and is generally regarded as a top-tier character.

La Rapière des Sorel[]

Born among the poor class, Amy grew like a weed. Disliking the soldiers as she did, one rainy day she told a lie in response to a soldier’s question. As a result, it managed to save the life of Raphael who was on the run. Raphael dedicated his own life to protecting her in return and taught her the art of self-defense. That proved to be a skill that saved Amy's life.

Raphael was affected by Soul Edge and the Evil Seed and turned evil. Amy, who was nursing him at the time, also received the same evil influence. Now, even though she is no longer human, she still protects the secrets of his teaching.[2]

Weapons[]

Critical Finish[]

Amy's Critical Finish

Amy Mirror Match Critical Finish

Thousand Roses: In Amy's Critical Finish, she rapidly stabs her opponent like Raphael's Unending Stings and pink rose petals appear when hit. After the second to last hit, as a final blow she does a slow motion hit and the opponent is flung a far distance with rose petals falling. After that, she says, "Pathetic." If she does this against Raphael, she will instead ask, "Does it hurt?" Scheherazade also use this critical finish but a feather will appear instead of rose petals.

Weapon Arts[]

Arcunum Columba: This is one of her signature moves, High Arc, which now is a Break Attack. Before performing it, Amy bows down to her opponent in animation, the same she did during her taunt in Soulcalibur III, dodging all coming attacks, and immediately delivers a blow. During the hit time freezes for a few seconds. It's very simple to create a combo both before and after the move, but the range of this Weapon Art is pretty short. If the attack is landed, the opponent is thrown behind you, never hitting the wall, so you can keep on beating him. You can also turn around and activate it again and again, or to do so after performing Circular Blitz every time after the Weapon Art. The effect of the move remains the same, when opponent is hit while standing, lying on the ground or caught in the middle-air and he'll never be stunned by it. It easily turns into a combo, extends wall combos and is absolutely safe if blocked by the opponent.

Bloody Funeral: That's a transformation of Amy's Unblockable Attack into a Weapon Art. At the beginning there's an animation of her turning around, and then she momentously unleashes a piercing blow on the opponent. This Break Attack have a nice combination of a long range, almost immediate start and great combo possibilities, including unlimited consecutive use of the move. The opponent is hit even if he lies idly on the ground and it's pretty simple to catch him with this attack in the air. He won't be stunned after being attacked by it in any case. There's a small chance of being hit by the opponent's middle or low attacks after the animation, but all high attacks will surely be avoided. Being safe even when blocked, this Weapon Art can also be used as a beginning of a wall combo.

Abyssal Reaper: That's a rapid combination of Lilith Parry and Dark Abyss. At first Amy lowers her rapier, performing Lilith Parry, after that there's a slight side step of hers with the animation, in which she says "It's your fault", drawing the rapier closer to her chest, and at last she releases a deadly mid-range (virtually long-range) Break Attack as she jumps forward. Her sword no longer emits purple glow during Lilith Parry. The effect of the Weapon Art depends on whether the Lilith Parry is activated by a coming middle or high attack of the opponent. If Guard Impact goes off, the opponent bounces off the ground after the blow, enabling Amy to perform a combo, if not, the opponent is just knocked down to the ground, in that case he can hit the wall. Either way, this attack does massive damage (though it's stronger if Guard Impact has been activated), doesn't stun the opponent, cannot be stopped and is extremely efficient during a fight. It always causes a Guard Burst, in case the opponent is guarding. In spite of its low chaining abilities, this move is a perfect way to stop endless series of the opponent's attacks. It possible sometimes to extend a wall combo with it and turn some regular attacks like Bleak Touch or Soaring Flutter into a combo. The strike is vertical, but nevertheless, the opponent is still unlikely to side-step it. Furthermore, she never jumps over the enemy during it, even when he's on the ground. In its version with Guard Impact, another Abyssal Reaper will go as a combo, but it won't without it.

Stray Ghost: This Weapon Art is more often referred to as a "vampire bite". It's a grab, which can be performed at any distance, but there are certain details. Once it's activated colors on the screen fade and Amy does her taunt movement (she combs her hair), saying "What are you scared of?", then she turns around and walks ahead, but she also flickers rapidly until she appears behind the enemy, says "Come to me", colors go back to normal and she grabs him, biting his neck. The movement of the grab itself is that of Raphael's female version of Mermet de Vec with 15 hits, where the first one is about thrice as damaging as the rest fourteen. It has the same "healing" abilities if you press the required buttons. She teleports behind the opponent's back regardless of the distance between them and it also works on enemies when they crouch, so it's fair to call it a middle grab. It has an immediate start, which enables you to perform a great amount of combos and wall combos with it at the end. This throw won't fail even when a stunned enemy is almost on the ground after an attack (though it depends on the angle), but it works only on opponents on their feet. Under no circumstances you can be interrupted while performing it. However, even a move like this has its drawbacks. At first, it isn't very damaging and it takes a lot of time. And since she vanishes and emerges behind the enemy, there are particular nuances when the opponent is standing close to the wall or the edge of the arena. If that occurs, then Amy will appear not behind, but in front of him and it will work nicely unless there's a distance between you and the enemy. For some reason, this gap will remain the same after her teleportation and she'll simply grab the air, although it won't fail if at the beginning of the activation Amy is standing backwards. All things considered, Stray Ghost is quite a unique and fun Weapon Art to use, as grabs have never been so easy to create a combo with, let alone an unlimited distance and health restoration it provides.

Stages[]

Romanian Valley - Castle Siege (SCIII)[]

It has been more than 100 years since Vlad the Impaler lead his army against the Ottoman Turks and crossed swords with the Sultan in order to protect this land and his home country of Walachia.

Located somewhere in the deep mists of the southern Carpathian Mountains, this castle was not originally designed for a battle of that nature, but it was now about to face exactly that. The army of the Duchy of Walachia surrounded the castle and, seeing that the master of the castle was not going to give up without a fight, began their attack.

No one knows why the national army initiated such a large-scale move, but the rumors say that a contagious disease that brings with it mysterious symptoms was spreading from beneath the castle, and the country had moved to destroy it at the source.

Wolfkrone Monument (SCIV)[]

Not much is known about this stage aside from what can be construed from its visual appearance. The battle takes place on an enormous, circular platform, surrounded by wooden statues. Like the figures in a cuckoo clock, the statues are kept in constant, monotonous animation, playing music on their artificial instruments and dancing around the edge of the stage. Carousel horses hover behind the wooden statues, circling the ring. The stage consistently rotates. In the distance, the hills and mountains can be seen, along with (presumably) the Wolfkrone castle, and the enormous brass bells of a bell tower.

Dark Capital Ostrheinsburg (SC:BD)[]

Dark Capital Ostrheinsburg is a stage featured in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny. It replaces Ostrheinsburg Castle - Twilight from Soulcalibur IV, but instead of the sky being cloudy, the rays of the sun can be seen penetrating through the clouds.
