Set between 1591 (after Nightmare and Soul Edge's destruction) and 1608 (Soulcalibur V), Soulcalibur VI: Finis is a prequel that shows all of the events that occured between the two games, as well as during V.
The campaign consists of a large number of chapters, each starring a single character or group, which progresses throughout the 17 year timeline.
Sporting the largest cast in Soulcalibur history, the game features characters from all of the main series, including Soulcalibur V.
Returning characters from Soul Blade through Soulcalibur IV have younger and older costumes, which change their age and some of their lines.

- Amazoo is a fourteen year old girl raised by Lizardmen. She wields an axe and shield like Aeon pre-Soulcalibur V.
The characters here are either non-canon to the series (Chronicle of the Swords characters), only appeared once (Greed and Miser), or do not appear until Soulcalibur V (α Patroklos and Pyrrha Ω).

Soulcalibur VI: Finis has the most expansive character creation of the entire series. It contains nearly all the parts from as far back as Soul Calibur III, all of the weapons from as far back as Soul Blade, and all of the styles available for created characters including those in Soul Calibur III.
Customization also allows not only more layer options, but also left/right options for hands, shoulders, feet, and eyes, armor destruction options (breakable or unbreakable), and a large number of voices that each have multiple personality variations like in Soul Calibur III. Individual lines, as well as poses and mannerisms can be selected or deselected to allow for a character whose personality fits perfectly.
Weapons can not only be customized, but also created. Customized weapons can have their colors changed or even their size (which alters the weapon's speed, strength, and reach). Customizable weapons are done through selecting a weapon from nearly any character and then customizing it. Characters with two weapons (i.e. Cervantes, Hilde, and sword and weapon characters) can swap out individual weapons from each hand with those of another (ex. Cervantes using a rapier, Sophitia using an axe, or Hilde using a staff).
