BiographyEdit

Jan Flanders
Helen's father, when he was a knight
Helen was born and lived with her parents in the Netherlands. Her father, who was a knight, was crippled in battle and became discharged from military service. When she turned fifteen years of age, a group of bandits attacked her village. Helen's weakened father was unable to defend the family and was killed, while her mother was captured. Before the bandits could find her, she was rescued by Daozhang, a Chinese swordsman, who then adopted her. For several years, he had taught her how to use a sword. When Helen's training was complete, she was given her father's sword as well as a few components of his armor, which Daozhang had kept ever since he rescued her. After thanking her master, Helen left his household to temporarily live by herself and experience solitary life.
Young Helen Flashback

While sailing, the ship she traveled on was attacked by a crew of pirates. She was assisted by Xie Tian in the defense, and they both aided the ship's guards in driving the pirates away. Soon, the two were wed, and had a son together, named Owen. Not long later, Xie Tian left the household in search of a way to destroy the Soul Calibur and Soul Edge.

Soul Calibur IVEdit

Concerned for her husband, Helen went to find Xie Tian and left her son to Daozhang to temporarily care for. On the first night of her journey, she arrived at a town of fleeing and dead civilians, only to encounter Nightmare. In the sword clashing, she chipped off shards from the Soul Edge, which all struck her. Helen was soon overpowered, and Nightmare prevailed and attempted to claim her soul; however, he was unable to. Given up, he left Helen for dead and moved on.

The power of the shards quickly healed Helen and increased her strength. She even underwent physical changes, such as change in eye color. Continuing her search, she ended up in Kunpaetku Shrine. With the power gained from the Soul Edge shards, she defeated all of the lizardmen and their leader. Since one of the shards inside her body contained part of the former human's soul, she was able to see through the history of Aeon Calcos. She returned that part of the soul to its owner, and hoped that the lizard man would one day be at peace.

Helen finally found her husband, and aided him in fighting armies of Soul Edge's minions. Within the conflict, they briefly fought side-by-side with Leandra, and spoke of fighting for a better future for their children. Through their efforts, they eventually witnessed the destruction of the Soul Edge. At the start of the temporary peace, Helen returned to her son with her husband.

The following year, however, Helen underwent more physical transformation. As she clearly was no longer human, she went far from home, for fear that the Soul Edge shards lodged inside her would drive her to insanity. Throughout the years, she would use her powers to project images of herself to "visit" Xie Tian, but keep her presence secret from Owen. Helen found a new home in the Americas, in a small abandoned castle. She was eventually able to recruit five people, forming a small mercenary group, in order to keep watch on potential dangers that could cause Soul Edge to be reborn.

Another year later, malfested soldiers led by a steel golem named Barberax brushed near Helen's castle. Using her thought projection abilities, Helen discovered that Barberax was after her for the Soul Edge shards lodged inside her body. Barberax would eventually find Helen himself, but Helen was already prepared for him in a one-on-one duel. Out of carelessness, Helen was grazed by the steel golem's axe, causing a single Soul Edge shard to drop out of her body. Seeing their leader wounded, Helen's allies immediately helped her fight the attacker, forcing him to retreat before he could get his Soul Edge shard. Neither Helen nor her mercenaries paid attention to the shard that was left on the ground. While Helen was recovering, she was informed by Henri that Deer Spirit saw a woman nearby the castle and pick up the Soul Edge shard. Helen delayed the order to pursue, and told her subordinates that she would keep an eye on the woman.

Helen vs. Leandra

Seventeen years after the destruction of Soul Edge, Helen returned to Europe and once again met Leandra by chance. Leandra had learned a new fighting style the past several years, and Helen agreed to help test the acquired skills in a friendly sparring match. During the fight, Helen accidentally knocked off Leandra's half-face mask, and saw the burn it had been hiding. Although Helen wondered who or what could have caused such a scar, she did not question it. After the fight, Helen picked up Leandra's mask from the ground and returned it to its owner.

Soul Calibur: Rise of OmegaEdit

Due to the increasing number of malfested, Helen was forced to halt her "home visits" when she put on black armor and went into battle along with her group of mercenaries. Word eventually broke out that a servant of the third Nightmare by the name of Shindra was on her way to destroy Soul Calibur. While Helen wished for both swords to be destroyed, it would be much more difficult to destroy the two blades one at a time than at once. Using her powers, she was able to sense Shindra, and tracked the Soul Edge servant. When Helen found Shindra, she sent Briggite and Renée after her. The mercenaries, although held there own, proved to be no match. Helen decided that she would kill the girl herself, and then overpowered Shindra in the duel. Before Helen could strike the finishing blow, her blade was knocked aside. Standing between her and her enemy was her husband, Xie Tian. The latter, who did not recognize his loved one at first because Helen was wearing a helmet that covered her face, attacked. Not wanting to kill her husband, she only blocked, and occasionally through a kick. A few seconds into the fight, Xie Tian stopped his attacking, and asked Helen to confirm her identity, as he figured her out.

She removed her helmet so they could have a proper reunion. Xie Tian then explained that Shindra had betrayed Nightmare, and was now just a lost child looking for her parents. Helen agreed to help the girl find her mother. Before parting ways, the couple reluctantly told Shindra that her mother is Leandra, shocking the girl.

Helen and Xie Tian would find Leandra not too long later, telling Leandra that she had a daughter looking for her. They also told Leandra where to find her missing daughter. As Leandra had always believed she only had a son, she did not take this information very well, so instead of immediately reuniting with her missing child, she headed home.

Helen, using her thought projection abilities, discovered that Shindra and Leandra eventualy reunited, Shindra's real name is Alexandra, and that Shindra's father is the infamous Mitsurugi. Unfortunately, Helen later found out that Alexandra and Leandra were facing the third Nightmare. Since Xie Tian and Helen were not too far away, they both decided that they would help. When they arrived at the scene, Alexandra was in Nightmare's grasp, and Leandra was in her Omega state, ready to fight Nightmare. Xie Tian immediately leaped at Nightmare and kicked his arm, freeing Alexandra. Helen caught Shindra after she flew out of Nightmare's grip. Xie Tian's kick caused Nightmare to stumble, giving Leandra the opportunity to land a backhand on the Azure Knight and take him out with a stab to his chest. In his last moments at the given time, Nightmare taunted Leandra that she would never be rid of him. With the threat gone for now, Leandra reverted back to her normal form. Although Leandra and Alexandra failed their goal, they did not give up. With all the dangers arising, Xie Tian and Helen told the mother and her daughter that they would be around, in case more help was ever needed. Leandra wished the couple luck, and she continued her hunt for Nightmare with her daughter.

Helen continued to use her thought projection to keep an eye on Leandra and Alexandra. She saw them defeat Nightmare and turn Alexandra back to normal. Alexandra then asked Leandra to allow her to train under Xie Tian and Helen, and Leandra agreed. Through her thought projection, Helen told the mother and daughter the she and Xie Tian accept Alexandra as their student. When Helen's thought projection led Leandra and Alexandra to her and her husband's location, Leandra left for her endless quest. The training began the next morning.

Weeks later, in the middle of Alexandra's training, three assassins sent by Nightmare targeted the girl with crossbows. Helen blocked all three crossbow bolts with her body, while Xie Tian killed the three malfested soldiers. Helen was able to track Nightmare's location, but soon discovered that he was the Azure Knight was on a collision course with her son. The three were just close enough to Nightmare to have hopes of intercepting him before he could reach Owen.

Unfortunately, Nightmare managed to destroy Helen's thought projection that had been following him. This stunned Helen and prevented her from creating another projection. When the three reached Owen's location, Nightmare was already fighting Owen as well as Yuner. Alexandra immediately rushed forward and overpowered the weakened Nightmare, stabbing him in the abdomen. With a vow to kill Alexandra and her friends, Nightmare escaped through dissolution.

The reunion of Helen, Xie Tian, and their son was cut short when an entire army of malfested soldiers arrived at the now-ghost town. The five of them fought through the mass number of enemies, with the help of Leandra, who was firing gunshots from afar. After the servants of Nightmare were defeated, Xie Tian ordered Owen to return to the city he had been living in, and to take Yuner with him. Owen agreed to his father's commands and left his parents and Alexandra to continue their hunt on Nightmare. By the time the three reached Nightmare, however, the Azure Knight had already transformed into a form that resembled Night Terror. Just as they confronted Nightmare's new form, Xie Tian informed Alexandra of the Jingu Staff, a weapon that grants the wielder incredible strength. Xie Tian also told Alexandra to go to Owen and help him find the staff, as Owen had also trained in wielding staves. Alexandra wished her masters luck before husband and wife began holding the monster off.

PersonalityEdit

Helen is a courageous an honorable woman. Unlike most humans, she is mentally immune to malfestation, due to her unbreakable will; this is shown by her ability to maintain full control of herself, despite the many Soul Edge shards in her body.

AbilitiesEdit

Unlike Ivy and Maxi, Helen's malfestation has changed her physical appearance and capabilities almost to the extent of an actual Soul Edge wielder, because she has tens of Soul Edge shards lodged inside and all over her body. Beyond granting Helen functional immortality, the malfestation changed her eyes to being demonic-looking, and increased her muscle mass.

In terms of abilities, it is clear that Helen has increased strength. Although Helen was already capable of wielding her father's fairly heavy longsword with just her right hand, the malfestation granted her the ability to swing and stab with the weapon as swiftly as a swordsman would use a significantly lighter Chinese blade. Helen's malfestation has also increased her durability, pain tolerance, and recovery. Helen displayed this when she survived a relatively deep wound inflicted by Barberax and continued to fight, and when she took three crossbow bolts straight to the body and appeared to be in no pain; in both cases, Helen fully recovered within hours, and none of the wounds left scars. Helen also has the ability to create projections of herself, and can talk and see through these projections. Not only can she place these projections at any specific location, but she can also transport these projections to nearby any person she has seen, even if she did not know the person's current location before sending the projection. These thought projections were shown to not be entirely indestructible when Nightmare destroyed one with a Soul Wave.

EndingEdit

Soul Calibur IVEdit

Soul Edge and/or Soul Calibur rise up in swirls of energy. Helen looks up, rushes to the sword(s), jumps, and grabs the or both swords. She looks around and sees the energy coming to her. Helen lifts the sword(s) while it/they glow(s) with power (if both swords are held, a vortex will lift Helen off the ground), rushes forward again, slashes the energy dispersing her, and jumps off the tower. The scene changes to her with the Soul Calibur or Soul Edge in the ground. She pulls it out and raises it in triumph.

The text only screen says "Her name will be engraved in history and will live on forever."

HypotheticalEdit

Algol is on the ground, with Soul Edge and Soul Calibur next to him. Helen walks up to the Soul Edge and lifts it up. Algol rises to his knees and watches on. The eye glows with increased intensity as the evil tries to take control of Helen. However, she is unaffected, and plunges Soul Edge into Soul Calibur's central orb, shattering the spirit sword. With Soul Edge stuck into the ground, she releases the evil sword and unsheathes her own. She stabs Soul Edge's eye, shattering it as well. Finally, Helen sheathes her sword and walks away.

The text-only epilogue says: "With Soul Calibur and Soul Edge destroyed, she returned to her family and lived the rest of her life in peace."
