Zasalamel's moveset is somewhat complicated for new players as it isn't too good at directly attacking his opponent, it is more effective when used to trap the opponent by letting them come to you. His moveset does have excellent range due to the scythe's scale, so it isn't to hard to lure the opponent in once you're used to using his style.
It's the same that Soulcalibur III.
Zasalamel's moveset changed radically in matters of speed and the commands to use for each attack. Although the overall strategy didn't change (meaning lure your enemy and interrupt him/her using the longer range of the scythe ) some attacks became faster and more directly allowing him to be more offensive.
Zasalamel plays the same as he did in Soulcalibur IV.
