So, Project Soul have finally decided to acknowledge that the Soul series is 20 years old! They have made a new logo to go along with the 20th anniversary and have offically stated:
"So many surprises" is anyone else excited? They're finally taking notice of the series again, and I'm eager to know what these surprises are! They're releasing special character pictures that contain information and trivia about that specfic character! We will update the Wiki with what is said on these official pictures! The first character they have released information about is Taki.
Is anyone else excited? We have many surprises to come acording to Project Soul, let's hope one of the surprises is Soulcalibur VI!
The surprises could be anything, a new game, a remaster/remake of an old game, a port maybe? Who knows, but I would take any one of those! I'll keep you all updated with new information as it comes out!
The Legend will never die!
The fact that Namco considers the Free-to-Play game part of the franchise says a lot about the state of the series.
And seeing that most of the time, Soul characters appear in other series or as goodies (e.g. Arby's fries...) rather than in their own game also says a lot about the state of the series.
I have to disagree, the fact that PS keep using the Soul characters is actually a good thing in my book. I mean, they're keeping the series alive still, and must have interest in it still. Otherwise, what would be the point in using their characters for different purposes. Maybe they're also doing this to get more fan interest in the series, enough interest would hopefully lead to a new game.
Not to mention, Crash Bandicoot made an appearance in Skylanders then got his own game after 9 years.. So to me, characters appearing in other series' besides their own is an indication that something is going to come about soon!
I wouldn't call the series "alive", but rather in a state between life and death. Project Soul stated that "silence shouldn't happen" then they keep on ignoring people and throwing stuff all around without any answer to anything. It's quite disheartening to see all our beloved characters everywhere but in the universe they should be in, without giving a single hint about a newcoming real game.
Also, remember the "new" Crash game is nothing but a remastered version made by Vicarious Visions (who were in charge of Crash games after Sony bought Naughty Dog in 2001 and of... Skylanders games!), it's unfortunately not a new game... If anything, it just means that Bamco is milking the Soul series to the core. Of course I want to see something new, but seeing how they are trying to get each and every buck we have, it might be disastrous. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I guess I just have a positive outlook on the series, or I'm blinded by hope aha!
Ether way, to me the fact that they are using the characters still is a positive, I'd personally be a lot more worried if the series was completely dead, in a sense that even their characters were not appearing in anything at all! Also, PS have given a lot of hints towards a future installment. Saying things like (not directly quoted, from mind) "the soul still burns" "exciting news in the future" (or something similar to that, I can't remember) "we can't talk about the future of the series... Yet" and other small little hints. I admit though, those hints were around from Lost Swords release to about last year, I think. Since then, they have fell silent, which is worrying.
Anyway, to me I think the fact that the characters are still living on in other games is an indication that they still have interest in the series, and are most likely just trying to figure out what the best step would be to take the next installment.
Only time will tell, however a lot of people are losing interest now because it's been so long. If they do have something planned, a company can only hold interest for a certain amount of time, and putting your characters into different series to garner interest isn't always the best move, and people will get bored. Guess we just have to wait, although even I am getting annoyed with waiting now. I'd rather know if they are or are not planning something for the future, and definite answer would be better rather than little hints. At least that way, if they say that there won't be no more installments, people can stop waiting and wishing for one.
This is Soul Calibur V's fault; it lacked content and modes, its story was an incomplete mess and the character customization was underused, showing that most of the development when to the online mode that people stopped playing after two months.
The lack of Arcade Mode endings and the pathetic story mode made the game unappealling to casual fans and its gameplay, while decent, was not as engaging as SC2 or even the slightly unbalanced but still good SC3 for fans of those games.
Unfortunately, Tekken 7 has suffered the same thing with the lack of Arcade endings and content but due to brand recognition has managed to sell well.
With games like Injustice and Mortal Kombat (love'em or hate'em) having a lot of content i.e, full story modes, Arcade endings, a comparable skill gap and now character personalization with Injustice 2. PS/Namco has to step up their game if they want to compete.
It's weird how Soulcalibur's Facebook page went completely silent in the middle of their 20th Anniversary celebration. A theory is that they got tired of all the complaining on the comments, but what did they expect? The only reason people went along in the first place was because they thought it was leading up to something. If they have nothing real to show, of course they're going to be mad. Still, I just find it strange that not a thing has been posted at all in six months. Generally, a silence like that could be a build up to something big. Or it could be dead for real.
But as JaseyJasee said, if SC was completely dead, Namco wouldn't be using their characters and the franchise at all. Clearly Namco believes there is still profitability from the franchise, and Project Soul is obviously still around. Also, I remember the composer Junichi Nakatsuru saying to "Please look forward to all the exciting new themes our sound designing team will produce for you." which is as good as an indicator as any that they're planning something.
I want to hold on to at least a shred of hope that SC isn't dead. It was one of my favorite franchises ever and I want to see it again for current gen, with the old characters back. It's just really hard to remain optimistic after all these years of waiting and getting burned from so many events where I was hoping it would be announced but it wasn't. Let's keep our fingers crossed for the future.
JaseyJasee: I totally agree with your opinion even though I lack the optimism you show. I've always been used to thinking the worst to be either pleasantly surprised or not disappointed in the end ^^ As you said, their silence (even if they felt sorry about it) and the full stop of their activities aren't a good omen for the future...
GoodGamer14: Tekken is surfing on the "buy DLC characters who've been ready for months" wave, which is unfortunate, as it's the only reason why I never buy MK or Injustice games until the GotY edition. PS and Bamco should focus on what made their series the best, and not draw from inspiration from where there's only a downgraded version of what they can do.
Ultimate Lazer: that's actually the reason why I'm losing hope. They were on a roll, with tiny hints, active polls and trivia (though most of them were inaccurate ^^), and BAM suddenly, nothing. That is the worst PR I have ever seen in the history of video games. I'm just like you, still hoping without hoping too hard (that last bit of hope is always the hardest to snuff out), the Soul series was my favourite fighting game series, to me it has always bee way better than Tekken...
Let's hope we'll (finally) hear something from PS soon, because we haven't had anything since January...
Maybe there's a chance we'll see something at Games Com or maybe New York Comic-con.
